A martyr is someone who tries to meet their own needs by giving things up to take care of someone else. It is usually used in a negative way, but it can be positive as well. So, if I sacrifice something to give something to someone I care about, that can be a good thing. If I go out of my way to make a show out of it, or I get some joy out of talking about how much I'm giving up, that can be a damaging and unhealthy.
